The Rev. Mr. Kenn Knopp, the "founding father of Volkssporting in the U.S." of Fredericksburg, TX died on Monday, July 15th at the age of 79 years. Volkssporting made its debut in the United States on June 12-13, 1976, in Fredericksburg, Texas as part of the celebration of the Bicentennial of American Independence. This event was made possible by the efforts of Rev. Mr .Kenn Knopp, a catholic deacon from Fredericksburg, Texas. The Fredericksburg local club that conducted the first Volksmarch was named Volkssportverein Friedrichsburg (VVF). Kenn was instrumental in the forming of the first United States governing body, the IPS-USA, which stands for International Peoples' Sports-United State of America. It was April 20, 1976, that the IPS-USA was incorporated in Texas and accepted by the IVV as the national organization of Volkssporting in the U.S.A. To assist in the promotion of the sport, Kenn developed and became editor of The American Wanderer, the newspaper of the IPS-USA. The first issue was published in January 1978. Truly, all AmericanVolkssporters owe a great debt of thanks and appreciation for all Kenn did to bring Volkssporting to America.

In deep grief we received the information of the sudden death of our friend and former President Mr. Joseph Emonts-Gast who passed away on 7th June 2013. As enthusiastic walker and founding member of the Volkssport association of the German areas in Belgium he contributed considerably to the foundation of the association and its advancement. He was President for 30 years and Honorary President until his death. He dedicated his full attention and commitment to the concerns of the associations and walking clubs as well as to the club activities. Joseph competed with passion for his ideas and concepts. Once having an idea in mind, nothing could prevent him from implementing it. We keep countless activities in our minds which he gave a special touch of fellowship and sociability by this cheerfulness and humour.

We will honour him in memory and convey to his wife Adi our sincere condolences.

For the Governing Board and all members of V.G.D.S.

     Secretary H. Müllens

     President E. Dannemark
